Steps for International Pet Travel

Thinking about bringing your pet along on your next international adventure? Whether you’re relocating or just taking a vacation, traveling abroad with your furry companion takes careful planning. At Inwood Animal Clinic, we’re here to guide you through the process and help make your trip as smooth as possible.

Where to Start

If you’re considering international pet travel but aren’t sure where to begin, don’t worry—our experienced team is ready to assist! One of the first things you’ll need is an International Health Certificate, which can only be issued by a USDA-accredited veterinarian. Our on-site USDA-certified vet will work with you to ensure your pet meets the health requirements for your destination.

How to Prepare

Plan Ahead
Start planning well in advance of your trip. Every country has its own set of regulations for incoming pets, which may include specific vaccines, microchip identification, or lab testing. Contact the embassy or government agency of your destination country to find out exactly what’s needed, and allow enough time to meet all requirements.

Check Airline Rules
Each airline has different policies for traveling with pets. Be sure to check with your carrier about approved travel crates, in-cabin vs. cargo options, and any other guidelines. If your pet isn’t used to being in a carrier, give them plenty of time to get comfortable with it before the flight.

Schedule Your Appointment
Once you have your travel details and know your destination’s requirements, contact us to schedule your pet’s health exam. Some countries require your pet to be examined and certified within 10 days of your departure to ensure they’re healthy and cleared for travel. After your visit, we’ll provide the necessary USDA health certificate to include with your travel paperwork.

Final Steps Before You Go

As of May 2024, all completed health documents must be sent to the USDA Veterinary Services office in Raleigh, North Carolina for official endorsement. Please note that the Albany, NY office is no longer processing certificates due to staffing reductions, so make sure to send everything to Raleigh.
